Criteria for Hospice

Patients are eligible for hospice after being certified by a physician as having a life expectancy of 6 months or less, depending on the course of the disease, and are no longer seeking medical treatment. Patients should have a primary caregiver who is willing to take the responsibility of caring for the patient. If no caregiver is available, other arrangements are possible. Control of symptoms of the illness is the focus of treatment chosen by the patient, instead of aggressive treatment to cure the disease.
